The Kalamazoo Jazz Culture Connection presents Torch & Keys: Autonomous Space & Flourishing- 1950\’s Black Women\’s Jazz. This exciting evening will focus on the the vibrant sounds of 1950’s Jazz, highlighting the exceptional contribution of Black Women vocalists, musicians, writers, and composers. Join us on a musical journey with vocalist Stephanie Payton and pianist Brandon Fitzpatrick, (also a member of the Battle Creek based band Minor Element) performing songs from the rich catalog of 1950\’s jazz by Black Women.Dr. Michelle S Johnson / DJ Disobedience will speak on jazz in 1950\’s Kalamazoo and beyond, rooting the evening in historical context. Delight in signature beverages by Kahuna and a spin on 1950’s hors d’oeuvres by Sassafras (available for purchase).
