To promote recycling in the City of Portage and Kalamazoo County, the seventh annual recycled art event will be held using recycled materials that will be displayed in Celery Flats for one week. This is not a juried art show but a venue for artists to express their creativity and create public awareness on recycling. Public voting and judging will be conducted with prizes awarded the day of the event, with public choice for the community art one week later. All artwork will be displayed outside oat Celery Flats for public viewing. All art work needs to be outdoor friendly.
Acceptable media must contain 100% recycled materials (expect for bonding devices such as screws, nuts and bolts, welding, glues and other fastening materials). The focus is on materials that were originally manufactured and would be thrown away. Your creativity will provide new life for materials that would otherwise be discarded. We are looking for works of art that would use materials in a manner that is different from its intended use.
COMMUNITY ART COMPETITION
Prizes will be awarded in a variety of categories including a People’s choice from visitor voting conducted on designated day(s) and/or the website. A panel of area artists will judge the artwork based on adhering to the recycling content for eligibility, with 60% creative use of materials as they were not originally intended, and 40% overall artistry and orginality. Judging will be conducted on Friday, October 4, 2019, with prizes awarded that day shown below. The People’s Choice Award will be announced on Monday, October 14, 2019.
HOW TO ENTER
Limit of one entry per person postmarked no later than September 13, 2019. A fifty dollar ($50) deposit is required with your entry form and will be refunded after the event and the artwork is removed from the Park. A check or money order should be made payable to the City of Portage and mailed to the location on the entry form. Classes from K-12 schools, colleges or universities submitting a work of art can waive the $50 entry deposit by submitting a Letter of Intent or Commitment on school letterhead and signed by the teacher/instructor, with their entry form to hold their spot in the contest. Entrants will be asked on the entry form to list the materials used for their creations. All artwork for the Community Art area must fit into the designated 10′ x 10′ space with no exceptions. Artist are responsible to ensure that their art is secure, weatherproof, and provides any mounted surface or structure if needed. Materials or mounting devices will not be available onsite.
Entry forms with accompanying entry deposit (or Letter of Intent/Commitment) must be postmarked or received at the Parks & Recreation office (Portage City Hall, 7900 S. Westnedge Ave., Portage, MI 49002) no later than Friday, September 13, 2019. entrants will be notified of acceptance into the show no later than Friday, September 20, 2019. There will be a limit this year of 30 entrants for the Community Art area which will be accepted on a first received basis.
SET UP & PICK UP
Entrants will be responsible to set up and remove their creations. You must provide your own materials, mounting structure or device. For the Community Art area, please bring appropriate personnel and transportation devices to move your work of art into its 10′ x 10′ exhibit space. The Community Art exhibit space will be outdoors and will not be secured, but every effort will be made to monitor the Park. Set-up for the Community art will be on Friday, October 4 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. ONLY unless other arrangements have been made in advance with the event organizer. All artwork must be completely installed by 3 p.m. Friday, October 4. All works of art must be left on-site for public display and voting through Friday, October 11. Creations must be picked up by Sunday, October 13 by 8 a.m. ONLY, or your $50 entry fee will not be refunded and your creation will be disposed of.
Any individual is eligible to participate, including K-12, college and university classes, except employees of the City of Portage and City of Portage Park Board Members are not eligible to enter. Youth Group category includes classrooms, scout troops, neighborhoods, or other organized youth groups, and all members must be 18 years of age or younger. By entering the contest you consent to have your submitted artwork featured and published for publicity purposes. Artwork will not be accepted if it is deemed obscene, threatening, and/or offensive as deemed by contest representatives.
