Presented in collaboration by Black Arts & Cultural Center, Dabney & Co., Edison Jazz Festival, The Gilmore, Helen L. Fox Gospel Music Center, Institute for Public Scholarship, and SHARE, this casual, interactive evening focuses on historical appreciation, musical delight, and community spirit, celebrating the Harlem Renaissance's timeless influence on American culture, and the thriving jazz scene of Kalamazoo.
Enjoy live performances and demonstrations by Jazz Pianist Aris Chalin, including the iconic styles of stride and boogie-woogie. Explore the origins and evolution of jazz as a defining art form of the Harlem Renaissance with Pastor Millard Southern. Discover the history and significance of rent parties in Harlem, illustrating jazz as a unifying force within the community. Join Angela Anderson, radio host on 95.5 The Touch FM and board member of SHARE, along with local jazz educators, musicians, and cultural leaders in learning about the current jazz scene in Kalamazoo and its connection to the legacy of the Harlem Renaissance.
