Speaker: Zaide Pixley, Kalamazoo College

A mentee of pianist Sergei Babayan (who is performing on May 6), Daniil Trifonov’s playing is defined by sensitivity, depth, and consummate technique. During the 2010-2011 season, the young Russian pianist pulled off a hat-trick, winning medals at three of the music world’s most prestigious competitions: Third Prize at  Warsaw’s International Chopin Piano Competition, First Prize in Tel Aviv’s Rubinstein Competition, and both First Prize and Grand Prix in Moscow’s Tchaikovsky Competition.

Ten years and a Grammy Award later, Trifonov is in high demand as a soloist, collaborative artist, and composer. In this ric program of works by Brahms, Prokofiev, and the Polish composer Szymanowski, he explores technically demanding repertoire that pushes the boundaries of traditional Western harmonies.
