Born enslaved on an Alabama plantation, Traylor witnessed major changes during his lifetime that influenced his artistic process.

Traylor is regarded as one of the greatest self-taught artists in America. He has been celebrated through a retrospective at the Smithsonian and is represented in collections across the United States.
