Art Hop October 2021 Stop 21: Meg Ostara at Haymarket Plaza Tent 3

Presented by Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo at Haymarket Plaza

Photosynthesis Creations by Meg Ostara – Meg Parsley – Artist Statement and Link

Meg Ostara is 26 years old and new to the Kalamazoo area. Born in Indiana, her grandma taught her to paint by picking gourds in her garden and turning them into birdhouses. She explained texture and color blending as she used fan brushes for grass, and contrasting colors on flowers. She explained the importance of cleaning brushes but Meg has yet to not be a messy artist who ruins her brushes. She’s lived in Michigan now for 8 years, spending much of her time in the upper peninsula, where she really fell in love with nature and water. She likes using pressed flowers because she feels it plays that there is always life to be had after death. Energy lingers. And prolongs the use of flowers and nature beyond usual use. When a bouquet is done at a wedding or a funeral how many times is that beauty just tossed. If you pick a flower, you cherish its wilt. Both literally and metaphorically. In relationships, there is beauty in the rise and fall. In life, there is beauty in the sting and songs. You can’t have one without the other. Life and death, or more so death and rebirth, rising from your ashes, as well as nature, water, and its reflections, all belong to the important pieces of Meg’s painting puzzle, that she pours a lot of emotion into as well. There is a story with every piece. She tries to add depth in the meaning of her paintings as well as in color. Shadow work is so important to her and her paintings have really helped her know and learn and appreciate her own shadow this last year. Truly, we see in the art a mere reflection of ourselves so long as we don’t know the artist’s story. So may her art help you on your journey home, whatever that is to you.
