Instructor: Deb Eck

This class is a brief introduction to the process and you can't possibly do it wrong. You’ll learn how to get started, ways to continue, and enjoy some cheats and tricks for those who think they can't draw. It requires very few materials, all of which are inexpensive and easy to find. No art experience required!

Altering books and their text has a long artistic history. This is a great transition/warm up activity for the beginning of your day or a way to wind down in the evening. Slowly removing everything that no longer fits on a page, the space becomes a place for meditation. Sometimes all the extraneous text is eliminated and sometimes you can draw or doodle too. Like all studio work, you’ll find the work runs in cycles and common themes ebb and flow through the finished pages.

Materials needed:

- A book you are willing to alter - one with decent paper and text that is not too small or tightly spaced/cramped. Used self help books are especially good because they are loaded with juicy, evocative words.
- Pencil
- Eraser
- Sharpie markers - different sizes for different things, so a selection of tips is nice.
- Optional: A white gel pen, some coloured pencils or coloured markers, a small set of alphabet stamps and an ink pad, stencils.
