Instructor: Katie Platte

Learn how to bind a book using the long and chain-stitch technique, a binding that dates all the way back to medieval Germany. Who would’ve thought this style would still look as hip today? With this method, the paper sections of your book will be sewn directly through the spine, allowing your stitch-work to be visible and incorporated into the overall design. Beginners welcome.

You can either buy your own materials or choose to purchase a materials kit to make a book with a leather cover, you will still need to provide your own tools.

Materials:

One larger piece of paper for the cover of your book. I recommend Canson paper, but it could be scrap book paper as long as it folds well. The smallest that will work is 12 x 12” but 12 x 18 would be better.

Or

Leather, 6 ¼ x 12” or 5 5/8” x 11 (depending on size of the paper you choose to use) and a leather strap, about ½” by 24”

25 pieces of paper cut to 8.5” x 5.5” or 9” x 6”

5 feet of embroidery floss or waxed thread in a color that matches your cover
