Spektral Quartet with Mark DeChiazza

Spektral Quartet with Mark DeChiazza

Presented by WMU School of Music at Western Michigan University - Dalton Center Recital Hall

The twice-Grammy nominated Spektral Quartet will combine forces with New York-based filmmaker, designer, choreographer, and director Mark DeChiazza and Western Michigan University faculty composer Lisa Renée Coons for the soft premiere of The Space Between. This piece combines choreographed gestures and experimental music in a piece designed for, and with, the Chicago based quartet. Moments of tenderness, solitude, conflict, virtuosity, and discovery abound in this fully-staged work – and born from these physical gestures, the sonic landscape spans from the crunch of pure noise to delicate, ethereal harmony.

Named “Chicagoans of the Year” by the Chicago Tribune in 2017, Spektral Quartet has a tour schedule including some of the country’s most notable concert venues such as the Kennedy Center, Miller Theater, Library of Congress, and NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts. Mark DeChiazza is a leader in staged contemporary music performances, collaborating with such renowned artists as Kronos Quartet, Eighth Blackbird, John Luther Adams, Steven Mackey, Sarah Kirkland Snider, and Amy Beth Kirstin. These remarkable artists have been workshopping material and building this piece with Coons of the WMU School of Music for the last two years.
