Tibetan Buddhist monks from Drepung Loseling Monastery will perform a concert of song and dance as part of their international tour of The Mystical Arts of Tibet.

The performance features multiphonic singing, wherein each monk simultaneously intones three notes of a chord. They also utilize traditional instruments such as 10-foot long dung-chen horns, drums, bells, cymbals and gyaling trumpets. Rich brocade costumes and masked dances add to the exotic splendor.

Endorsed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, The Mystical Arts of Tibet tour hopes to make a contribution to world peace and healing; to generate a greater awareness of the endangered Tibetan civilization; and to raise support for the Tibetan refugee community in India.

In conjunction with this performance, the monks will also be constructing a mandala sand painting at the Kalamazoo Valley Museum from November 6–10. The opening ceremony is Wednesday, November 6 at 12:00 PM. A lecture will take place on Sunday, November 10 at 1:30 PM, with a closing ceremony following at 3:30 PM. The public is welcome to observe the mandala creation during the Museum’s regular hours of operation (9:00 AM – 5:00 PM).
