Composer/Organist Graeme Shields will appear at Kalamazoo’s Milwood United Methodist Church for a 3 p.m. concert on Sunday, September 30. Part of The Milwood Series, his program will feature the first performance of a work he has composed specifically for the church’s Möller/Rodgers combination pipe/analog organ.
Shields has held numerous organist and accompanist positions across Minnesota and Michigan. His love for collaborating with other musicians has led to his role as a facilitator for the organization of concerts, commissioning of new music, and creator of educational programs. His Milwood concert will include the appearance of an “Orgelkids” instrument – a complete, craftsman-built pipe organ which can travel easily in a box and be assembled on-site to help kids and adults understand how a pipe organ works.
Currently residing in Kalamazoo, Graeme Shields (b. 1992) is a Canadian-born composer. His works have been performed in the United States, Canada, and Russia. His degrees include Bachelor of Music in theory and composition from the University of Minnesota-Duluth and Master of Music in composition from Western Michigan University. As an organist, he is currently working at Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church in South Haven.
