The Madonnas of Leningrad by Debra Dean, with discussion leader Pam Boudreau. The ravages of age are taking their toll on Mariana, an elderly Russian woman. While she cannot hold on to fresh memories, her distant past is preserved: vivid images of her youth in war-torn Leningrad, and the exquisite masterpieces of the Hermitage Museum. As the Luftwaffe's bombs pounded the proud city, Mariana and other museum staff removed the museum's priceless masterpieces for safekeeping, as she built a personal Hermitage in her mind.
