SAINTS, ARTISTS AND MERCHANTS: Religious Painting in Contemporary Ethiopia

SAINTS, ARTISTS AND MERCHANTS: Religious Painting in Contemporary Ethiopia

Presented by Kalamazoo Art League at Kalamazoo Institute of Arts

Though religious painting in the Ethiopian church began in the fourth century A.D. and continue to this day, for centuries Ethiopia's Christian art was one of Africa's best kept secrets.  Ethiopian Christians hold that their kings were direct descendants of David, the second Hebrew son in the Old Testament; and Judaism is very much a part of their religion. Dr. Silverman will show us how all of this relates to current artistic practices of the Orthodox Church in Ethiopia.
