Wu Man and the Shanghai Quartet

Wu Man and the Shanghai Quartet

Presented by Fontana at Western Michigan University - Dalton Center Recital Hall

The acclaimed Shanghai Quartet and pipa (Chinese lute) virtuoso Wu Man unite to perform new works by contemporary Chinese composers for string quartet and pipa.

Hailed as the world’s premier pipa virtuoso and a leading ambassador of Chinese music, Grammy Award-nominated musician Wu Man is “the artist most responsible for bringing the pipa to the Western world” (Los Angeles Times). She has built a career as a soloist, educator, and composer, giving her lute-like instrument – which has a 2000-year history in China – a new role in both traditional and contemporary music.

The Shanghai Quartet has a long history of championing new music and juxtaposing traditions of Eastern and Western music. The Quartet has worked with some of the world’s most distinguished artists and regularly tours the major music centers of Europe, North America and Asia.
