Concerts in the Park - Tom Knific Quartet

Presented by Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo at Bronson Park

Today's concert will be held in First United Methodist Church!!

The Tom Knific Quartet celebrates the release of Knific’s CD The Muse, on Azica Records. A Cleveland native, Knific, has gone on to perform on tour and record with many of the great jazz and classical artists of our time including Dave Brubeck, Michel Legrand, Fred Hersch, Randy Brecker, Edward Simon, Toots Thielemans, Andre Watts, Pepe Romero, and many more. Tom is Director of the award winning Jazz Studies program at Western Michigan University. The TKQ has performed throughout the US and has had residencies in St Petersburg, Russia, Mozambique, Africa.
The TKQ includes saxophonist Andrew Rathbun, whose recordings Nate Chinen (JazzTimes, NY Times) has called “a successive series of revelations.” His 11 CD’s as a leader for Challenge, Fresh Sound and SteepleChase records with stalwarts like Jay Anderson, Bill Stewart, Billy Hart, Gary Versace, George Colligan, Luciana Souza, Ben Monder, Geroge Garzone, Kenny Wheeler, and many others, have always pushed critical boundaries. Pianist Gene Knific, Tom’s son, is a cutting edge player and composer with 8 Down Beat Awards credited in his young career. Gene’s music palette is remarkably diverse and has performed and/or recorded with Joe Lovano, Kevin Mahogany, Roseanne Vitro, The Western Jazz Quartet, and rocker Steve Miller in recent years alone. Drummer Keith Hall, drummer for Curtis Stigers for over a decade, is a passionate performer who has also worked worldwide with the likes of Betty Carter, Sir Roland Hanna, David Kikoski, Wynton Marsalis, David Morgan, Michael Phillip Mossman, Mark Turner, Larry Goldings, John Pizzerelli, Steve Wilson, Joe Wilder, Claudio Roditi, Luciana Souza and Terrell Stafford.
The Tom Knific Quartet is a joyful and exhilarating ensemble that draws on a world of influences. The TKQ delivers highly interactive performances ranging from intimate moments of stirring melodic beauty, to deep groove and spectacular contemporary virtuoso turns.
