Gilmore Rising Stars: Igor Levit (Russia/Germany)

at Unknown

Igor Levit was born in Russia and raised in Germany and now resides in London. He recently received the prestigious Royal Philharmonic Society Young Artist Award and was named one of the BBC’s New Generation Artists for 2011-2013. Levit serves as artistic director for the Chamber Music Academy of the Festspiele-Heidelberger Frühling and is artist-in-residence at the Kissinger Sommer as well as the Festival Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Levit’s 2013 album of Beethoven sonatas for Sony Classical was named Best Classical Album on both UK and German iTunes as well as Gramophone’s “Recording of the Month” in October 2014. The magazine called it “a debut of true significance,” and Alex Ross called Levit “among the most promising pianists of his generation.” Composer Frederic Rzewski has dedicated eight sonatas of his cycle, “Nano Sonaten,” to Levit and is currently composing a new work for him.
