Sentimental Journey Swing Band

Music

A four piece ensemble (guitar, string bass, fiddle, trumpet) that plays standard jazz and contemporary tunes from the 30's 40's 50's and 60's. Band features vocal harmonies along with a vast library of classic tunes presented in a light, easy-going manner that is perfect for any venue. Examples of just some of the tunes played are, Sentimental Journey (of course,) Chattanooga Choo-Choo, My Blue Heaven, Sunny Side of the Street, Dream a Little Dream, Let Me Call You Sweetheart, Tangerine, plus over 50 more. With over 150 years of combined musical experience, a vast library of great classic swing tunes, and little humor, Sentimental Journey Swing Band is sure to be a crowd pleaser.

Stulberg International String Competition

Since 1975, the Stulberg International String Competition has brought the luminaries of the string world to Kalamazoo for its annual Competition and Master Classes. Its mission is to promote excellence in string instrument performance by gifted young artists under the age of 20.

The Chrysalis Institute

The Chrysalis Institute is a multi-faceted artist resource organization, fostering the creative process and centering the voices of emerging BI&POC artists. We invite creators who work in music, visual arts, performance, and writing to participate in our offerings. Through The Milkweed Learning Hub, Waystation Podcast, and Chrysalis Residency, we encourage artists to learn, share, and retreat, while offering resources for personal development, showcase opportunities and spaces for restoration.

The Gilmore

Festivals ; Music

Created in 1989 to honor the legacy of Irving S. Gilmore, the organization is known for its biennial Gilmore Piano Festival, a three-week celebration of piano music; the Gilmore Awards, a regular series of awards presented to deserving pianists based on a non-competitive process; and commissioning of composers to create new works for the piano. Since 1989, 14 biennial Festivals have been enjoyed by thousands of visitors to west Michigan. Eight Gilmore Artists and 36 Gilmore Young Artists have been recognized, and 35 new works have been created for the piano. Two distinctive concert series—Piano Masters and Rising Stars—ensure that world-class piano music is presented continually. In addition, a major program dedicated to community engagement and music education touches the lives of thousands of area children and adults by offering neighborhood concerts, piano lessons in elementary schools, music therapy, group lessons for adults, toddler-friendly concert experiences, summer piano camp, master classes, and much more.

THE PINE LUNCH

THE PINE LUNCH acoustic trio serves up a blend of savory songs and tasteful harmony, music to satisfy the cravings of your heart. Playing guitar, bass, and mandolin, they present a mix of time-honored traditional folk, pop, blues, swing, and gospel as well as some fun, original songs. The Red Sea Pedestrians

The Red Sea Pedestrians are a full-blown, instrument-swapping fusion between tradition and the here-and-now. We’re talkin’ high-energy world-beat grooves, hypnotic laments from the earth, songs of celebration and wonder; a warped and beautiful blend of American Roots, Rock, Klezmer, Gypsy, Classical and Jazz, all filtered through the band’s original vision. RSP are a melting pot of six distinct singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalists, almost a self-contained variety show. Their sound is first defined by the sweet interplay between clarinet and violin, further colored by a kaleidoscope of guitar, banjo, keyboard and mandolin, and driven by a rhythm section deep in the pocket. Multi-layered lyrics, rich harmonies, and masterful playing complete the experience. This is a band that can pull you in with a tender folk ballad, get you up and dancing to a ragtime jam, break into a frantic instrumental barn-burner, and then blow your mind with a heavy psychedelic rock freakout. Their captivating live shows and ambitious CDs have been getting rave reviews and building a dedicated fan base throughout Michigan's independent music community for over a decade, including back-to-back WYCE Jammie Awards for Best Roots Album for "Adrift" (2010) and "The Electromagnetic Escape" (2011). The bands’ 6th CD will be released in summer of 2016. The Red Sea Pedestrians are proud members of the Earthwork Music Collective, a group of artists who believe in the intrinsic and historical power of music to raise both community and self-awareness and serve to facilitate and encourage original music in the state of Michigan and beyond.
