Orchestra Rouh is an after-school orchestra program offered by the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra, in partnership with the The Suzuki Academy of Kalamazoo (SAK). The ensemble began in 2017 to nurture the emotional well-being of Syrian refugee children and recent immigrants through bilingual and culturally-centered music instruction. “Rouh” means soul in Arabic. Orchestra Rouh is led by Project Director Ahmed Tofiq, who specializes in Middle Eastern traditions on the violin and speaks Arabic and Kurdish.
