A nineteenth-century tale of the Chinese emperor who becomes infatuated by the song of the nightingale, and of his attempts, first to make the wild bird subject to his rule, then to reproduce the bird and its songs by mechanical means. How the story is resolved parallels the course of Andersen’s own unrequited love for the Swedish songstress Jenny Lind.
