Tulip Time is putting together a public art installation for our upcoming 90th festival. The project is called Klompen Garden, and it will consist of 45 pairs of artfully designed (oversized) wooden shoes installed in tulip beds and parks throughout downtown Holland.
We are currently calling all individual and collaborating area artists to submit a design concept and sketch(es) showing how they would bring a pair of wooden shoes to life if selected as a finalist to move forward with this project. Artists are encouraged to think outside the box with their concept and mediums (metal sculpture, mosaic, paint, ceramics, graffiti art, etc.). Artists should keep in mind that the completed projects will be installed outside and will need to be able to withstand the Michigan springtime elements. The exhibit will also be interactive in the sense that visitors will be encouraged to find all 45 installations and step inside the large shoes for an unique experience.
We are taking submissions now through January 11 via an online submission form found at www.tuliptime.com/klompen-garden. All that is required at this time is a detailed concept and sketch. Of all of the submitted concepts, 45 will be selected as finalists. These selected artists will receive a large pair of wooden shoes to begin their project. They will also be eligible for juried and public cash awards.
