American Journalism Project Community Listening Ambassadors

How do you get local information you trust? What do you want to know about your community? How well do local media represent you? We want to know. The American Journalism Project is hiring community listening ambassadors to help us learn how people in the Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, and Battle Creek areas get the local news and information they need. This is a paid opportunity.

Who we’re looking for:

● People who live or work in Kent County, Kalamazoo County, or Calhoun County with deep ties to their communities
● Good listeners who are respectful, caring and curious
● English fluency; proficiency in other languages is a plus
● Experience with community service, neighborhood advocacy, and/or community organizing a plus
● People who are networked with Black/African American, Hispanic/Latinx/Spanish-speaking, Indigenous/Native American, Asian/Asian American, or other immigrant communities are strongly encouraged to apply

What you'll do:

● Reach out to people you know in whatever way is best for them (phone call, text message, email, over the fence)
● Conduct brief interviews and take notes
● Make introductions, share surveys, and recruit people to participate in focus groups
● Share ideas and feedback with our research team about who we need to hear from and what we should ask
● All work can be done remotely
● Earn $20 per hour
● Time commitment is low. Average commitment is 3-5 hours per week or less for about 8-10 weeks
