Hello! I’m Con Ray. I’m a Michigan born artist who works in collage, print media, sculpture, and painting. Hello! I’m Con Ray. I’m a Michigan born artist who works in collage, print media, sculpture, and painting. I’m currently in the process of getting a Bachelor’s in Fine Art from Western Michigan University with a minor in Writing. As you’ll see in my work, I’ve been exploring a new and experimental form of art I call Personifism.
It involves me fully treating the works as if they were aware that they are a piece of art and also that we as people view them. I try to personify them as much as possible, almost to the point where they may be thought of to have a soul, in an effort to express and evoke more human emotions than other more traditional forms of art. I explore this concept in many different ways, whether that being a print that stabs another copy of itself in pursuit of being the true original, or maybe it comes out in a sculpture entirely made of discarded pieces of art that feels ridiculed and an orphan without a creator to look up to. I would describe my work as humorous, complex, and clever. One of the more interesting pieces I have right now is a painting I call “Thommas” that I’ve been continuously adding paint to depending on where he is, how I’m feeling, or how he is feeling. It is in a sense, an evolving painting. I find him quite interesting, but he feels as if he is an animal in a zoo—stuck in a rectangular acrylic prison for people to gawk at. I hope to continue developing my work and researching to see what else I can discover.
