"Throughout my career social dialogue has always remained a vital element in my work. It is the communication of ideas in the process of creation that is important to me. My creative work is “content driven” with visual elements and media chosen by what serves the project best. For example: the responsive installation Prime Field, in Sangren Hall, Western Michigan University, uses words to prime students for learning. The Random shelving system combines unexpected size & spacing variation. Telling time becomes a puzzle with the Half Hour clock. The Love Letters series uses mixed materials to form greetings often with deep emotional content. With the artworks, Transition is a consideration of the influences & decisions that propel change from one state to another. Body of Water reflects the physical makeup of our bodies in relation to our environment. The performance I’m a Stranger combines poetry, dance movement, and video; and in Fruit Baskets puppeteers manipulate objects and trigger sounds accompanied by a humorous recording of radio personalities hawking gift fruit baskets. At the same time, these creative works carry deeper meanings through visual metaphor, surprising juxtapositions, and humor. My attempt is to reach the pre-conscious mind where our ideas form, surfacing preconceptions for review and, perhaps, for change." Paul Marquardt

I studied Art from a young age and had the benefit of having an amazing teacher who had studied at the Art Institute of Chicago. I went on to study Graphic Design in the Dawn of the Adobe Age. I have worked in the Sign and Body Art industries as well as Designing logos and merchandise for numerous bands and clothing companies. I now work mainly in print media and collage as well as all types of painting from classic styles to street art. I feel my work has something, large and small, to say about society and the geopolitical status of America and forces even greater (yes they exist)! Capitalism, Plutocracy and the inequality of worldwide wealth and quality of life for humans. I have respect for ALL artists and promote a sense of hope and love through art and awakening.

Dan Monroe has been creating art for many years, having began his career at the ripe old age of nine years, when he would produce pastel portraits of people and sell them all over the Tri-State area while traveling with his parents who were Evangelists. Art has always been a driving force in his life- from drawing comic art to painting fantasy works, to portrait paintings for private collections, the creation of characters and illustration of children's books by celebrities such as NBA Hall of Famer Dennis Rodman, Actress Erika Eleniak (Baywatch), The Current Heavyweight World Boxing Champion Deontay Wilder, Kostya Tszyu (Boxing Hall of Fame Inductee), Boxing Legend Jesse James Leija, and several others. Dan has also created art for actress Sybil Danning (The Howling II, Playboy centerfold, Amazon Women on the Moon), and several other notable media personalities. Dan also taught art classes at Western Michigan University, and his fine art paintings have been exhibited and sold in Art Galleries across the Continental United States, and Hawaii.

Born at the end of Y2K, I'm a Michigan born multimedia artist who works in illustration, printmedia, painting, collage, writing, and more. While pursuing a Bachelor in Fine Art from the Gwen Frostic School of Art with a minor in Writing, I've already had work shown internationally and currently have a bi-weekly publication of a comic in the Western Herald Newspaper. My avant garde work is compelled by a philosophy I coined as Personifism, which blurs the world of art with our own reality. I believe that art should be treated as if it were alive, aware, and conscious of its existence or even conscious of us and howe we view it. In doing so, I play with a variety of topics including radically respecting materiality, interacting with the viewer and the art institution, and tackling traditional ideas about art history and what art means. It is an effort to allow the viewer to reflect on themselves and their own humanity and to think more deeply about art and what life really is. One of the more interesting pieces I have right now is a painting I call “Thommas” that I’ve been continuously adding paint to depending on where he is, how I’m feeling, or how he is feeling. It is in a sense, an evolving painting mixed with performance art. I find him quite interesting, but he feels as if he is an animal in a zoo—stuck in a rectangular acrylic prison for people to gawk at. I hope to continue developing my work and researching to see what else I can discover.

Austin Rounds

Austin Rounds is a twenty-year-old artist who has used his art as an outlet and a way to express himself when the world around him may feel off kilter, beautiful, and even challenging. Being autistic has not always been easy, but it is a part of who Austin is, and only adds to his creativity. Austin just finished his art projects as the sole illustrator for the book, Michigan Monsters and Macabre Series Two (available now) by Wicked Harvest Books. Austin continues to work on commissioned pieces of art and enjoys working with a variety of styles and mediums. Austin has been participating in the Kalamazoo Art Hop since June of 2021 and has been the feature artist at multiple venues including the Kalamazoo State Theatre. Austin so had multiple art exhibits at the Center for New Media and Kalamazoo Valley Museum (downtown Kalamazoo). Austin was interviewed by PBS for Kalamazoo Lively Arts Show and has been featured in multiple panel discussions at Western Michigan University and the Kalamazoo Valley Museum. Highly fixated on the Mystery of art, 'Hawkkn' is Connor Ryan's mission to bridge worlds through imagery of the "beyond". As a self taught digital artist & VJ, I have been on a quest to expose new worlds and new feelings through art since 2012. I am always humbled by the possibilities of new technology, since beginning with only an iPhone to edit photos and evoke feelings. My relationship to this inner world grows deeper every day as new tools and technology are learned. It is "beyond", because I do not understand it at all, it is simply beyond me. And for some reason, these feelings pair extremely well with music. It is my goal to maximize accessibility to this cosmic emotion. Recent exploration includes photobashed collages, rendering 3D fractals, animating glitch art, collaborations with AI, and ever-evolving VJ clips. The possibilities are boundless and I'm exploring them all. Open to teaching. Open to learning. Open to collaborating.

After working as a professional photographer, sculptor and glass artist for 15 years, I decided to integrate my love of fine art with my passion for preserving what fascinates me. In 2014, I opened a gallery in the Park Trades Center in downtown Kalamazoo, Michigan, and began displaying my collection of personal images and works gathered throughout the years but kept only closely to my heart. You will see my attention turns to magnificent vibrant colors and textures. Nature and lost objects working together in harmony have become my focus. I merge what nature has created and the materials she gives me with my visions for those things that strike harmony within myself. It is my hope that the viewer of my work is also drawn into the beauty nature allows me to create when we closely examine what she is capable of. The imagery I reveal could not exist without the hand that our earth extends - the elements and creatures who have participated in the making of their intricate architecture hold credit. I hope to spark conversation and bring about ideas of human consciousness through my work. In 2019, my work has shifted back to where I began with a strong focus on printmaking in a way that aligns with my graphic design background. I am currently exploring ways to merge printmaking with ceramics and hope to reveal my work in 2020.

My name is Huaming Wang. I am a multi-talented artist, designer, and engineer. My artwork has been exhibited nationally and internationally. I earned my Bachelor of Fine Art degree in China in 2005, and then worked for a few years as an assistant to Prof. Qingyuan Hu, Professor of calligraphy, stone seal carving, and Landscape Design, at Tsinghua University, the best University in China in this field. I used this experience in landscape design to work independently, including helping with surveys for a mining company. After moving to the USA, I earned my second degree in Construction Engineering from Western Michigan University in 2014, gaining experience while founding and also teaching at the Confucius Institute of Western Michigan University. In Fall 2018 I completed my Master of Fine Art degree followed by a Master of Architecture in Fall of 2019. Both of these degrees are from Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I also won an Asia Artist Award in ArtPrize 10. This year I won a Student Project Award from AIA for The Swan Lofts, a potential design for a multi-family site on Grand Rapids’ West Side. There isn't a single component that stands on its own, without the others feeding it with new energy to see the world anew. My work is about the people and environments I’ve been exposed to. I am inspired to create art that tells stories of creativity, color, perspectives, justice, awareness and curiosity. My life/work continues to evolve and grow as each body of work and phase of life subtly interconnects to the last.
