United Teens Talent
United Teens Talent (UTT), a program of the Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo, is for youth aged 13-19 who live in Kalamazoo County. Acts may include bands, singers, dancers, spoken word, musicians and comedians and may be individual or group acts.
Each student selected for the program receives professional coaching from some of Kalamazoo’s most recognized performing arts professionals – Ben Zylman, Marie Kerstetter and Kathryn Williams. Students compete for $1,500 in cash prizes in a talent show featuring the varied performance disciplines that closes out the program on Saturday, August 6th at the Kalamazoo Civic Theatre. In addition to their own act, the students participate in group numbers that open and close the show.
The 2017 United Teens Talent dates will be released soon. Doors open at 6:30 pm. Seating will be on a first come first served basis. If you previously called and reserved tickets, seats will be held for you. If you have any questions, please email Beth McCann at firstname.lastname@example.org
What is United Teens Talent?
United Teens Talent is a program of the Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo and is supported by the Irving S. Gilmore Foundation. The Arts Council, in collaboration with Ben Zylman, Marie Kerstetter and Kathryn Williams and hosts of community volunteers audition, coach and support local youth in preparation for this one of a kind teens talent show. The 20 top acts are selected from week long auditions held at various sites in Kalamazoo County. UTT is open to youth aged 13-19 who live in Kalamazoo County.
The show is an opportunity for students to come together to develop talents, build relationships and cultivate self-esteem. Judges who are professionals in the performing arts field will choose several winning acts and award them cash prizes (as much as $500). Top acts will also receive a professional demo recording.
Once selected to participate in the United Teens Talent Show, students will receive three professional coaching sessions, one at the beginning of the two-week rehearsal process and one at the end of the process. These sessions, which will be designed to help the participants prepare their acts for the talent show, will also help students understand their talents and how they might best be developed.
In addition to the individual acts that the participants will perform in the talent show, all students will be involved in musical numbers that will open and close the show. The two weeks spent rehearsing the music and movement involved in these two numbers will help to create a sense of “team” among the participants. From the very beginning, all participants will be working independently and as a part of something larger than themselves. The show is designed to foster a sense of community and respect among students.
