2018 Chinese New Year Gala

Spring Festival, also known as Chinese New Year, is the most important festival in China and many Asian countries. The 2018 Chinese New Year Gala hosted by the Confucius Institute at WMU will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17 in the East Ballroom of the Bernhard Center on WMU main campus.

The gala features traditional Chinese snacks, stage performances, games and gift raffle.  Confucius Institute at WMU teachers and their students will present songs, dances, poetry recitals, martial arts performances, folk music, Chinese yoyo performance and more. Students from WMU, Loy Norrix High School, Kalamazoo Central High School, the Gagie school and the Kalamazoo Chinese Academy are participating.

The date for the Chinese New Year fluctuates based on the lunar calendar and each year is marked by one of 12 animals. In 2018, Chinese New Year’s Day falls on Feb.16, which marks the beginning of the Year of the Dog.
