In the year 1851, hours before the first anniversary of the signing of the new Fugitive Slave Act, Lonnie Darker, a well known free Negro, sits with a group of friends, slave and free, outlining their next move for traveling north to Canada - "The Promised Land". Little do they know that a nearbye group of slave catchers, a part of the famous Gap Band, are going over their plans to capture the most important member of the escaping group; Ben, a prized slave of a powerful slave owner. However, Ben had promised, in memory of his mother, that he would die before returning to slavery.
