In 1851, Lonnie Darker, a well known free Negro, gathers with friends to discuss the perils of remaining in Christiana, Pennsylvania, after learning that kidnappers are set on returning fugitive Negroes to slavery.  Fearing chaos and capture, they set out on a journey to Canada and all goes well until it is discovered that the efforts of some of their own group may keep them from reaching, “The Promised Land.”
